Rui Borges Faces Five Absences for Sporting Vs Tondela
Sporting vs Tondela has turned into a selection problem for Rui Borges. Sporting will be without five injured players for the 20:15 match, while three more are in doubt. The coach may have to reshape the right side of defense and part of the attack before kickoff.
Rui Borges and the injury list
Fresneda, Gonçalo Inácio, Hjulmand, João Simões and Ioannidis are unavailable because of injury. Borges also said Vagiannidis, Diomande and Daniel Bragança are in doubt, which leaves Sporting with little room to settle the lineup early.
The uncertainty reaches both ends of the pitch. Salvador Blopa could be used on the right side of Sporting’s defense, a move that would take him into the first team after not playing there since December.
Salvador Blopa on the right
Blopa is the clearest candidate to fill one of the gaps if Borges needs a new option on the flank. The timing is awkward, because the final Sporting lineup may only be known about an hour before kickoff, shortening the coach’s window to settle the back line.
That leaves the attack under pressure too. Luis Suárez is Sporting’s top scorer, but he is described as physically very worn out, while Rafael Nel scored against Aves and could stay in the starting eleven.
Suárez, Nel and the attack
Suárez’s condition and Nel’s recent goal give Borges a second problem alongside the defensive reshuffle. If Nel keeps his place, Sporting would at least have one forward who has already delivered recently, even as the squad around him thins out.
The setup for Tondela now depends on how many of the doubtful players are ready when the team sheet is due. With five already out and three more under a cloud, Sporting may have to wait until close to 19:15 to know exactly how much of its plan survives.
