The Boys Season 5 Episode 5 "One-Shots" Recap: Homelander Goes on a Killing Spree
This is the villain episode. Episode 5 of The Boys Season 5, titled "One-Shots," dropped on Amazon Prime Video today, April 29, and audiences were treated to a unique POV episode highlighting several of the series' most hated characters — culminating in one of the season's most impactful deaths.
Homelander Cleans House
The body count is high, and it's almost entirely Homelander's doing. In Los Angeles, Soldier Boy took out Malchemical, while Homelander finished off Mr. Marathon — once the world's fastest supe. Actors Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Craig Robinson, Kumail Nanjiani, Seth Rogen, and Will Forte, playing themselves, were also killed.
The most significant death of the episode, however, lands closer to the inner circle. Homelander murdered close ally Firecracker — a brutal turn that reframes just how disposable everyone around him has become.
Firecracker's Breaking Point
The episode opens with Firecracker presenting an advertisement for the Democratic Church of America to the Seven, showing how painting Homelander in a godly light is affecting the general population. That momentum collapses fast. Homelander orders Firecracker to publicly accuse Greg of being a pedophile on air — a last-minute change she learns about only once she's already live. She breaks down on camera, overwhelmed by the betrayal she's being forced to execute. To viewers watching her broadcast, it reads as joy. The scene is vintage Boys — politics, manipulation, and public performance all tangled into one.
Sister Sage's Terrifying Agenda
In New York, the mysterious Sister Sage has been biding her time behind Homelander. In a candid moment with two-headed Ashley, Sage revealed she is actually hoping the Godolkin virus gets unleashed — with supes angered and ready to kill humans, a new world war would be inevitable. In the aftermath, with billions dead, she could finally get back to reading and being left alone. It is one of the coldest moments the show has produced in five seasons.
The Boys — Through a Dog's Eyes
The episode checks in with The Boys through the POV of Terror, Butcher's steak-loving bulldog. After a near-scare involving chocolate, there is a rare moment of cooperation between Billy and Hughie — who have been at odds all season — with Butcher even telling his former friend he could grab some V1 antidote for Annie and Kimiko. It is a brief exhale in an otherwise relentless hour.
What's Coming
Deep and Black Noir are teetering toward an all-out brawl. Soldier Boy's volatile relationship with Homelander continues to simmer. And Sister Sage's ambitions are in direct conflict with Homelander's own plans. Three episodes remain.
The season finale is scheduled for May 20 on Prime Video. New episodes drop every Wednesday at 3 a.m. ET.
