Noni Madueke curls 25-yard shot just wide for Arsenal
Noni Madueke came closest for Arsenal in the first half of their Champions League semi-final first leg against Atlético Madrid, curling a left-footed shot from 25 yards just wide of Jan Oblak’s right-hand post. Arsenal had spent the opening period on the front foot, and Madueke’s effort was the clearest sign they were beginning to turn pressure into chances.
Madueke tests Oblak
At 34 minutes, Declan Rice won the ball in the Atlético half and found Martin Odegaard, who slipped it to Madueke. He marched infield before bending the shot narrowly wide. It came after Arsenal had already started to find space between Atlético’s lines, with the first half described as being played on Arsenal’s terms rather than Atlético Madrid’s.
That move was the sharpest attacking moment in a cagey first leg that kicked off at 8pm BST. Arsenal were not breaking the game open, but they were getting enough of the ball in advanced areas to make Atlético defend their box and chase the next mistake.
Arsenal pressure builds
The warning signs had started earlier. At 6 minutes, Madueke beat two defenders beautifully and stood up a cross before the move broke down. At 24 minutes, he underhit Arsenal’s first corner of the night, and Antoine Griezmann headed it away. Those two moments showed the same pattern: Arsenal were finding Madueke in useful positions, but the final ball had not yet matched the movement.
Arsenal’s other best opening came at 15 minutes, when Cardoso blocked a shot from Odegaard after Viktor Gyokeres had cut the ball back. Jan Oblak was not forced into a save on Madueke’s attempt, but he still had to watch the shot flash past his post while Atlético continued to absorb pressure.
Atlético Madrid resist
Atlético had their own threat in the first half. At 14 minutes, David Raya saved a curling shot from Julian Alvarez, and by 17 minutes the match had settled into an unyielding arm-wrestle. Gyokeres was caught scrapping for a cross from the left at 21 minutes and ended up with a nose bleed, another sign of how physical the contest had become.
Reader comments at 35 minutes captured the wider stakes around Arsenal’s season, but the match itself remained the focus: a first leg with little margin, one dangerous chance from Madueke, and Atlético still standing in front of Oblak. Arsenal had the better of the exchanges, yet the scoreline was still waiting for someone to take a cleaner touch.
