Viktor Gyökeres Turnover Rate Puts Arsenal Under 42 Per Cent Pressure
viktor gyökeres was thrown into Arsenal’s front line after Kai Havertz went off injured in the 34th minute against Newcastle United on Saturday. The switch left Mikel Arteta facing a quicker decision on centre-forward options than he would have wanted, with Atletico Madrid due on Wednesday night.
Gyökeres and Havertz
Gyökeres struggled to make the ball stick up front against Newcastle United, and his 42 per cent turnover rate is the highest among centre-forwards with 900 minutes or more. Arsenal still rely on his scoring touch — he has 18 goals — but the numbers show a clear gap between finishing and control when the team needs both.
That gap is sharper because Havertz has been the cleaner outlet in recent matches. Arsenal have leaned on him up front in their last two games for longer spells of possession and attacks, and the club remains hopeful he will return before the end of the season.
Jesus and Trossard
Gabriel Jesus is the obvious next option on paper, yet his season has been mixed since returning from an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee in December. He has played just 85 minutes since the Carabao Cup final, which leaves little recent evidence that he can immediately take over the role on a heavy run of fixtures.
Leandro Trossard offers a different route. He has not started a game as a centre-forward this season, but he has done the job before, registering 10 Premier League assists in 20 matches in the 2022-23 season as a roaming false nine. Trossard and Havertz also helped spark the run that took the title race to the final day in the following season.
Atletico Madrid looms
Arsenal’s next opponent adds another layer of pressure. Atletico Madrid have conceded three or more goals seven times this season and have gone 36 Champions League matches without a goalless draw, so the shape Arsenal choose at centre-forward will shape how much control they can keep on Wednesday night. Arteta already knows Havertz can “moves, communicates and makes a team better,” but for now he needs a forward who can do enough of that while the injury is assessed over the coming days.
