Gyokeres Penalty Sends Arsenal Ahead at Metropolitano Stadium
Viktor Gyokeres put Arsenal 1-0 up at metropolitano stadium with a 45th-minute penalty, giving the visitors the half-time lead in the Champions League semi-final first leg. Arsenal had been nervous early, but they settled and took control before the break.
Gyokeres Strikes Before Half-Time
The decisive moment came after Hancko ran into Gyokeres from behind in the area. Jan Oblak guessed right, but the shot still beat him for pace. Gyokeres’s finish brought up his 19th goal of the season and changed the tone of a half Arsenal had spent growing into the game.
That was the only scoreline difference after 45 minutes, but it came after a spell in which Arsenal dictated the tempo. Atlético had been forced to work around Antoine Griezmann for much of the first half, while Julian Alvarez offered their clearest threat.
Arsenal Control The Middle Phase
Alvarez headed Ruggeri’s cross over from 12 yards in the 29th minute, Atletico’s best opening before the break. He also had a shot blocked in the 36th minute after stealing a pass out of Arsenal’s defence, but the home side could not turn those moments into pressure that lasted.
Arsenal answered with their own chances. Noni Madueke curled a left-foot shot from 25 yards just wide in the 34th minute, and Martinelli sent a speculative curler from the left edge of the area in the 40th minute before Llorente headed it away. Those chances framed a half that moved from caution to control for Arsenal.
Atlético Faced The Damage
Arsenal kept Griezmann quiet for much of the first half, and that left Atlético looking short of a reliable route back into the match once Gyokeres scored. The away goal gave Arsenal the lead they wanted from the opening leg, and it left Atlético with work to do after the interval if they want to stay alive in the tie.
