Steve Mcclaren In Talks Over Possible Rotherham Role

Steve McClaren was due to meet a Rotherham United figure yesterday about a possible role that could sit above manager. The 64-year-old is being considered as the club reshapes itself after relegation to League Two. That discussion could also affect Lee Clark, who is waiting on his own future.

McClaren And Rotherham

The pair’s meeting was scheduled for yesterday, with McClaren understood to be in line for a job that may be above the manager’s office. One option being examined is a director of football-style appointment in S60, a post Rotherham used during Leam Richardson’s short-lived reign in the 2023/24 Championship relegation season.

McClaren was already around the club on April 11, when he watched the Barnsley clash at AESSEAL New York Stadium. His background stretches from being assistant boss at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson to leading England between 2006 and 2007, and later managing Middlesbrough, FC Twente Enschede, Derby County, Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers.

Lee Clark’s Wait

Clark took the hot-seat last month for a nine-game spell and is still waiting to learn whether he will be offered the boss’s job beyond the final day. He said: "I would expect that to be getting clarified very, very quickly."

He added: "The club have so much work to do in lots of aspects - recruitment, information to the present squad about who would will be staying, who will be going, who will be offered new contracts." Clark also said: "There's the organisation of pre-season, which has obviously started and is ongoing."

Rotherham’s Rebuild

The urgency runs through the whole decision. Rotherham have been relegated to League Two, and Clark said the club cannot waste time getting the rebuild moving. "I think the club have to act quickly, and I think that they will," he said.

That is where McClaren’s possible input becomes central. Clark said: "The conversations I'm having are that they know time is of the essence, they know there's a rebuild needed, a reset needed." He added: "Everyone's accepting responsibility. All of us are accepting that we have to do something quickly and give what the fans what they deserve: a team they can be proud of, a team that's going to be trying to get the club back to its old glory."
