Charlie Woods Us Open Qualifying Ends One Stroke Short At Eagle Trace
Charlie Woods us open qualifying ended one stroke short on Tuesday at Eagle Trace Golf Club, where the 17-year-old amateur and Florida State commit posted an even-par 72. He missed a playoff for one of the final spots into US Open Final Qualifying, leaving him outside the group that advanced from Coral Springs, Florida.
Charlie Woods At Eagle Trace
Woods opened with a bogey five at the first hole, then answered with a birdie three at the par-4 sixth. The round turned at the 171-yard par-3 seventh, where he made double bogey, but he recovered with birdies at the par-5 10th and par-4 12th before dropping another shot at the par-4 14th.
He bounced back with a birdie on the next hole and finished with par on each of the final three holes. That left him in a large tie for 10th place, one shot behind the playoff line.
Brett Roberts Leads Eagle Trace
Brett Roberts claimed medalist honors with a six-under 66, while Blake Timble finished solo second two strokes back at 68. Hunter Fry took solo third with a 69, and Eric Dietrich was solo fourth at 70.
Five players shot one-under 71s and went into a playoff for the final guaranteed berth. Tyler Stachkunas won that playoff, and Curtis Thompson and Chris Francoeur earned the two alternate places.
Charlie Woods Progress
The 72 was a step forward from Woods’s earlier US Open qualifying tries. He shot 75 at Wellington Golf Club last year and was seven strokes off the required score, and he posted an 81 at the Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in 2024.
Eagle Trace had already been a successful site for him in US Junior Amateur qualifying, and this time he finished closer to the cutoff against a field that included experienced pros and talented amateurs. The path to Shinnecock Hills on June 18-21, 2026 runs through 13 Final Qualifying sites, with the first two fields held May 18, a Japan stop on May 25, and the remaining 10 sites scheduled for Monday, June 8.
For Woods, the number that mattered most was still one: one stroke from a playoff, one spot from the next stage, and one result that showed real progress even without a place in Final Qualifying.
