Poole Town Begin Playoff Trip at Gloucester City Fc
Poole Town begin their playoff campaign at gloucester city fc on Wednesday evening, and the matchup comes with promotion to the National League South on the line. Poole finished fourth in the Southern League Premier South with 75 points, while Gloucester City were third on 82.
Poole Town Lose Ground To Gloucester
The table gap is small, but the season series is not. Gloucester City beat Poole 3-2 at Meadow Park earlier in the season, then won 2-1 at Tatnam in February, so Suraci’s side go in needing to break a pattern that has already tilted toward the hosts.
Poole have, at least, arrived with some momentum. They won two of their last three matches before the playoffs and kept two clean sheets in that run, even after a 3-3 draw with Uxbridge on the final day of the league season.
Whisken And Gwengwe Setback
The bigger issue for Poole is personnel. Joint-manager Pat Suraci said club captain Jamie Whisken has likely played his last game for the club, while Shaquille Gwengwe is also likely to miss the semi-final through concussion.
That is a real hit for a side already leaning on Gwengwe’s output across the campaign. He finished as the league’s top scorer with 41 goals, and Poole will have to replace that threat without him in a game that could stretch every phase of their attack.
Henry Spalding provided one reminder of what Poole still carry when he scored against Uxbridge with a finish into the top right-hand corner. But the semi-final is a different test, and Gloucester bring their own edge after finishing third and beating Walton & Hersham 1-0 on the final day through Kieran Phillips.
Road Back To National League South
This is Poole’s first playoff outing since the 2022/23 season, when they were knocked out on penalties by Truro City at Bolitho Park. Joe Lea and Suraci have already secured a playoff place in their first full season at Tatnam, and Wednesday gives them a direct route to the final.
If Poole win, they will face either Farnham Town or Berkhamsted. Tickets for the semi-final are being sold online only and are selling quickly, which gives supporters one clear practical step before kickoff: secure a seat before the demand climbs further.
