Toluca’s Return To The Semifinals
Toluca enters a semifinal for the first time since 2014 after sweeping the Galaxy 7-2 over two legs. Paulinho did most of the damage in that series with five goals, while LAFC’s quarterfinal path included a 3-0 home win, a 1-1 draw in Puebla, two goals from David Martínez and a penalty from Bouanga in the second leg.
The stakes are simple: the winner of this two-match series advances to the final on May 30. That is why Marc Dos Santos kept the target aggressive, saying, "Obviamente queremos ganar por muchos goles, pero sabemos que estamos ante un gran oponente". He also said of Toluca forward Paulinho, "Es muy bueno dentro del área, trabaja duro," and added, "Pero Toluca tiene muchos jugadores buenos y eso lo sabemos. Second Leg In Mexico
Wednesday’s opener is only the first part of the test. Toluca will host the second leg on Wednesday, May 6, at Estadio Nemesio Díez, with the winner moving on from a semifinal pairing that has never existed before in the tournament’s history.
LAFC has reached the semifinals three times and advanced to the championship match in both of its previous appearances, including a 3-1 win over Club América in a single-match semifinal in 2020. Toluca’s No. 1 ranking, LAFC’s No. 2 ranking and the gap left by Bouanga make the first leg the place where the series can tilt quickly.
