Goldie Hawn Says 43-Year Kurt Russell Bond Stays Free
goldie hawn says her 43-year relationship with Kurt Russell has lasted because it never felt restrictive. She said she still feels freedom with him, a point she tied to a partnership that began in 1983 and has never turned into a marriage.
“When I say freedom, it means liberation. I don't feel penned in,” Hawn said. She also said she and Russell are the right match, even if they do not always agree on stuff, which is the kind of friction that can sink a lot of long-term Hollywood pairings.
1983 and the family glue
1983 is when they started dating, and the relationship later grew into a family built around Wyatt Russell, plus Hawn’s children Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson and Russell’s son Boston Russell. That family structure has been part of her explanation for why the bond held together while so many celebrity relationships have not.
In 2024, she said on SiriusXM’s Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend that “the greatest thing in God's world, is our family.” She added, “That is where we thrive and where we have incredible amounts of joy and really focus on that,” and called Russell “a family man.”
Why she never married Russell
Hawn has also been direct about the reason she never wanted marriage here: she said Russell matched her devotion to children being number one. “I can't explain it, but he was the one for me. It wasn't just because he was sexy and handsome and all of those things you get turned on by; it was because he matched my devotion to children to be number one. The seduction was really his personality and his focus on the children,” she said.
She and Russell have stayed together for four decades without a wedding license, and that refusal to formalize the relationship is part of the point, not a complication to be fixed. Hawn said, “We don't agree on everything,” but also said their relationship has “fed on a lot of goodness, a lot of wonderful life together.”
Hawn’s next release
Hawn turns 80 in November, and her first children's book, The After-School Kindness Crew: Pooch on the Loose, is set for release on May 5. The publicity cycle around the book gives her a fresh platform to keep talking about the same durable arrangement: independence, family, and a partnership that has lasted 43 years without needing to change its shape.
