Roy Lifts Avalanche Past Kings 2-1 in OT, Nhl Scores

Nhl scores turned on one overtime shot Wednesday when Nic Roy lifted the Avalanche past the Kings 2-1 on April 23. Colorado’s win delivered a 2-0 series lead for the first time in four years and put the defending edge squarely with the Avalanche after a game that needed extra time to separate the teams.

Roy Ends It For Colorado

Roy scored the winner in overtime, finishing the game after a second period that carried an unexpected interruption. A broken pane of glass behind the L.A. Kings bench triggered a 20-minute delay, then the teams returned to a one-goal game that stayed tight until Colorado finished it.

The score line never opened up. That made the extra frame the difference, and it gave the Avalanche control of the series before the night’s other playoff games even settled into similar patterns elsewhere.

Colorado Joins The Front

The 2-0 lead was the key milestone. It was the first time in four years that Colorado had held that kind of edge in a series, a stretch that now gives the Avalanche a much stronger position as the matchup moves forward.

Tuesday’s other series were all tied 1-1, which left Colorado alone with a two-game cushion. The Canadiens and Lightning were tied at that point after Tampa Bay forced overtime again, while Boston and Utah each pulled even with wins of their own.

Lightning, Bruins, Mammoth

Nikita Kucherov tied the Canadiens-Lightning game with 7:27 remaining in regulation on a wrap-around, and J.J. Moser finished it more than 12 minutes into overtime to even that series for Tampa Bay. Boston handled Buffalo 4-2 after scoring the first four goals, then held off two late third-period goals from the Sabres.

Morgan Geekie added one of Boston’s biggest strikes, scoring on a backhand from center ice against Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. In the other late game, Logan Cooley put Utah ahead with six minutes remaining in regulation and the Mammoth beat the Golden Knights 3-2 for Utah’s first-ever playoff win.

Game 3 between the Penguins and Flyers was scheduled for 5 pm MT on TNT, followed by Stars-Wild at 7:30 pm MT on TNT and Ducks-Oilers at 8 pm MT on tbs. Colorado leaves the night with the cleanest edge in the bracket: a two-game lead, an overtime win, and no need to chase the series from behind.
