Uofa fraternities face action after hazing allegations, hospitalizations
Three Uofa fraternities are under investigation after campus authorities said allegations of hazing and student hospitalizations involved Sigma Alpha Mu, Sigma Chi and Phi Delta Theta. The university has already placed Sigma Alpha Mu and Sigma Chi on interim loss of recognition and suspended Phi Delta Theta’s activities.
Sigma Alpha Mu allegations
University of Arizona officials said allegations against Sigma Alpha Mu were submitted on April 22. New members said they experienced burns from hot liquids, forced consumption of alcohol, alcohol poisoning and blackouts, and the allegations resulted in the hospitalization of Sigma Alpha Mu members.
Sigma Alpha Mu is not permitted to use campus facilities for events until the investigation is completed. Campus authorities said the organization poses a substantial risk to members of the school’s community.
Sigma Chi and Phi Delta Theta
Sigma Chi was also placed on interim loss of recognition after campus officials said it hosted two events this month in which UA students were provided with and consumed alcohol and were knowingly and unknowingly given drugs. Several UA students were reportedly sent to the hospital after the alleged alcohol and drug consumption.
Phi Delta Theta has been placed on an activities suspension and is only permitted to conduct business meetings. Campus officials allege that between the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters, its new members were subjected to forced alcohol consumption, degradation, humiliation, hazing and other threatening and endangering behaviors.

The cases put three fraternities under discipline at once, a broader response than a single chapter review. Students in the affected groups now face limits on events and campus use while the university’s investigations continue, with one chapter restricted to business meetings only and the others barred from recognition during the process.
