Ismaila Sarr Fires Palace Ahead 1-0 in Europa League

Ismaila Sarr scored in the first minute and Palace led Shakhtar at half time in europa league action. The goal was the fastest ever in Conference League history, and it gave Palace the kind of start that immediately tilted the match. Sarr drilled his finish into the bottom corner.

Sarr’s First-Minute Strike

Palace needed only one minute to break through. Sarr raced onto the move and finished low into the bottom corner, putting his side ahead before Shakhtar had settled.

That was enough to send Palace into the break with the advantage. In a first leg, a lead that early changes the rhythm for everyone on the pitch, because the team in front can choose patience while the team chasing has to commit numbers forward.

Braga And Freiburg Trade Chances

Elsewhere, Braga had a chance to get back in front against Freiburg after Philipp Lienhart conceded a penalty. Rodrigo Zalazar Martinez took it and missed. Freiburg had already seen Demir Ege Tiknaz open the scoring by sliding in to finish from a low cross, before Vincenzo Grifo levelled with a simple tap-in on a devastating counter.

The sequence left the game finely balanced at the other end of the bracket, with one miss and two quick finishes carrying the same weight as Palace’s fast start. Freiburg did not hold the lead for long, but they kept themselves level through Grifo’s equaliser after Braga failed from the spot.

Villa, Forest And 0-0

At the same time, Aston Villa were creating openings against Forest. Ollie Watkins forced Ortega into a one-handed save, and Emi Martinez later made a wonderful reflex save to claw the ball off the line. Rayo Vallecano and Strasbourg reached half time at 0-0.

For Palace, the key number remains the first minute. Sarr’s goal already put them in front, and the half-time score told the rest of the story: Shakhtar were chasing from the opening passage, while Palace carried the lead into the interval with the quickest goal the competition has seen.
