Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan expand transit talks in Ashgabat

Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan stepped up efforts to strengthen transport, logistics and transit cooperation after high-level talks in Turkmenistan’s capital, Ashgabat. Batyr Annayev, Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister, met Azerbaijani Ambassador to Turkmenistan Gismet Gozalov as the two sides pressed ahead with work that officials said has reached a strategic level.

Ashgabat talks on corridors

The discussions centered on the two countries’ geographic positions and the advantages they give for expanding transit potential. Officials said the talks also covered developing international transport corridors linking regions, a sign that the agenda went beyond routine diplomatic contact and toward practical route-building between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.

Both sides also highlighted the growing importance of political dialogue and regular visits in advancing bilateral relations. The source said strong political will from both countries’ leadership has elevated cooperation to a strategic level, giving the transport file political weight inside a broader bilateral relationship that is already being treated as long-term.

Intergovernmental commission work

The joint intergovernmental commission is actively exploring new opportunities in digital transformation, telecom infrastructure upgrades and logistics networks. That mix points to a cooperation package built around physical transport links and the systems that support them, from communications infrastructure to the movement of goods.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening fraternal relations, with the emphasis placed on practical, high-tech and infrastructure-driven projects. For businesses and shippers, the immediate significance is that the two governments are signaling a wider policy push, not a one-off meeting, around how cargo, connectivity and corridor planning can be aligned.

What comes next for Azerbaijan

The active commission gives the relationship a working channel for follow-up, and the next step will likely come through that mechanism as it studies new opportunities in logistics, telecom and digital transformation. Batyr Annayev and Gismet Gozalov left Ashgabat with the same core task still on the table: turn the political commitment into projects that can move through the corridor network.
