Tyler Morton Leaves Liverpool for Lyon and £15million Move
Tyler Morton left Liverpool for Lyon in a deal that could rise to around £15million, and he has quickly become central to the French club’s midfield. The former Liverpool player is now a key part of Lyon’s push for Champions League qualification after being on the fringes at Anfield.
Morton’s Lyon Role
Paulo Fonseca installed Morton as Lyon’s No 6, and the change has given him a fixed place in the side rather than the stop-start role he had in England. Morton has adapted to a new language and culture at Lyon while becoming a mainstay in midfield.
His work has been visible in the final third as well as in front of the defence. In Lyon’s victory over Metz in August, he helped create a shooting opportunity with a disguised line-breaking pass to Pavel Sulc. He also found Enzo Malebe with a line-breaking pass against Red Bull Salzburg.
Liverpool Path And Friction
Morton joined Liverpool aged five, made nine appearances in the 2021-22 campaign, and later added five more last season, with three starts. His last Liverpool appearance came on January 29, 2025 against PSV in the Champions League group phase, four years after he started at the San Siro against Milan in the same competition.
The move followed a spell in which Liverpool wanted to keep him as cover when a summer of 2024 approach from then Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso did not materialise. He had also built momentum through successful loan moves to Blackburn Rovers and Hull City in back-to-back seasons.
Lyon And The England U21 Lift
Lyon’s need for a midfielder with control and bite is sharpened by what happened before Morton arrived. The club were due to start the upcoming season in Ligue 2 after being relegated because of financial problems, but that decision was overturned on appeal, and every point in midfield has carried extra weight since then.
Morton’s change in fortunes began with the England Under-21 squad that won the European Championship, and he has taken his game to the next level at Lyon. He has also brought an edge in the challenge, nearly leading to a goal against RC Lens, which fits a player who is no longer waiting for minutes but shaping games from the No 6 position.
