Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver exit Greys Anatomy after Season 22

greys anatomy will lose Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver after the Season 22 finale on May 7, even as the series moves on to Season 23. McKidd’s Owen Hunt and Raver’s Teddy Altman have driven one of the show’s longest-running relationship arcs, and their exit resets the drama heading into another season.

Season 23 after May 7

Grey's Anatomy was renewed for Season 23, keeping the series in motion after the May 7 finale closes Season 22. That renewal means the show is not ending with the departure of two central characters, even though both exits land at the same time.

McKidd joined Grey's Anatomy in Season 5 in 2008 and has directed 48 episodes over 18 years. Raver first arrived as a recurring guest in Season 6 before becoming a series regular, then built a 12-season run as Teddy Altman. Their long presence gives the departure more weight than a routine cast shuffle.

Owen and Teddy's arc

Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman married in Season 18, then recently divorced this season. Showrunner Meg Marinis and Shonda Rhimes made a deliberate creative choice to end the characters’ arc, and Rhimes said, "Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen. It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves."

Marinis said the exits are not truly a goodbye because Grey's Anatomy has a tradition of bringing back past cast members for guest arcs. That leaves the door open in a franchise where departures have rarely been final, but this change still removes two characters who shaped the series for years.

McKidd and Raver exit

McKidd said playing Dr. Hunt and directing shaped him enormously, and he will direct his own departure scene. Raver called her 16-year journey with the series a true gift and thanked Debbie Allen for mentoring her behind the camera. For viewers, the immediate shift is simple: Season 23 will begin without Owen and Teddy as regular players, and the show’s next phase starts with two long-running storylines already closed.
