Piedmont Natural Gas Starts East Front Street Lane Closure Thursday
Piedmont Natural Gas is retiring a gas line Thursday in the 200 block of East Front Street in downtown New Bern, and drivers can expect delays while one lane stays open. The work runs just past Union Point Park, with traffic control in place through the day.
East Front Street Lane Open
The project is set to last throughout the day, so the restriction is not a brief stop-and-go closure. One lane of traffic will remain open, which keeps the street passable but leaves less room for vehicles moving through the work zone.
Drivers heading toward the bridge, U.S. 70 or James City are being directed to South Front Street as an alternate route. That gives motorists a clear detour before reaching the block where crews are working.
Downtown New Bern Traffic
Traffic control will be in place during the work, and officials are asking motorists to use caution while traveling through the area. The combination of an active work zone and a single open lane means drivers should expect slower movement on a street that already handles downtown traffic near Union Point Park.
For anyone crossing downtown Thursday, the practical move is to build in extra time and shift to South Front Street if the trip is headed toward the bridge, U.S. 70 or James City. The lane remains open, but the route is being narrowed while the gas line is retired.
