Van Gerwen Punched in Den Bosch Bar Attack on King’s Day

Michael van Gerwen was punched in the face during a bar confrontation in Den Bosch on King’s Day, a Monday night out that turned physical in front of security guards. The 37-year-old three-time world champion later chose not to press charges, and he was back in Premier League action by Thursday.

Den Bosch Bar Incident

Van Gerwen said he was talking with a man and a woman in the bar when a stranger suddenly hit him in the face. He tried to pursue the man, but two security guards stopped him and apprehended the attacker. Van Gerwen later described the man as someone who had clearly had too much to drink.

“That man had clearly had too much to drink and it felt to me like his anger came out of nowhere.”

“Just as he seemed to be heading for the exit, he suddenly lashed out. Of course, it's not right that I went after him. But that was an automatic reaction.”

Van Gerwen and MODUS

The footage of the incident circulated online before MODUS Sports Management addressed it directly. In its statement, the management group said, “We are aware of footage circulating of an incident involving Michael van Gerwen.” It added: “He did not provoke the situation and was not at fault. As this is a private matter, we will not be commenting further.”

Van Gerwen also said the man apologized via Instagram. “That man clearly knows he was in the wrong because he apologised via Instagram.”

Aberdeen Return for van Gerwen

The same week brought a return to competition, with van Gerwen back in Premier League action in Aberdeen on Thursday. He fell to Luke Humphries in the quarter-finals, closing the week with a result that showed how quickly he moved from a public confrontation back into tournament play.
