Jack Bostock Returns at Centre for Dolphins Against Melbourne

Jack Bostock will play his first NRL match in 10 months on Friday night, with the 22-year-old named at centre for the Dolphins against Melbourne at Suncorp Stadium. He has fully recovered from an ACL rupture, and the move gives the Dolphins another option in a position they want him to own going forward.

Bostock at Centre

Bostock has mostly been used on the wing in the NRL, but he handled centre last week for Redcliffe in the Hostplus Cup before this call-up. He has also played centre for NSW under 19s, and Kristian Woolf made the role clear when he said, "We see him as a centre going forward,"

Woolf added, "He's a terrific player, Jack." and "He brings a real presence to us." He also said, "He's got a real know-how in terms of how to play in the centres, both defensively and in attack." The Dolphins are putting that to use now, not later, after a 10-month layoff that ended with this selection.

Trai Fuller Dropped

Trai Fuller drops out after playing right centre in the 20-18 loss to the Warriors, where he set up two tries. Woolf said, "It's a hard call on Trai," and added, "I was really happy with Trai last week," but the club wants him to get more minutes at fullback in the state league because Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is most likely to play Origin in a couple of weeks.

"We also know that Hammer's most likely going to be playing Origin in a couple of weeks and it's really important that Trai's going to be our fullback." Woolf said. "He needs to go and get some time at fullback and the fitness." That puts Fuller on a different path from Bostock: one is returning to a first-grade centre role, while the other is being kept warm for a likely longer-term fullback job.

Dolphins and Melbourne Form

The Dolphins also welcome back utility Kurt Donoghoe on the bench after a hamstring injury, though he has been restricted to just one match this year. Woolf said, "He was probably our best players last year and I think people have really underestimated how much of an influence he has on our team," before adding, "He brings a lot of energy, work ethic and toughness." He said, "Kurt helps our halves in terms of his skill first and organisation as well."

Melbourne have lost their last six games, while the Dolphins have tasted defeat in their past four. The Dolphins had narrow losses to Penrith and the Warriors, and Woolf pointed to the standard his side has kept through that run: "What I've liked about our performances is we've really played tough," he said. "Our toughness and our work ethic and our desire to defend for each other, that's what's kept us in games."

Bostock's return gives the Dolphins a straight centre option at a time when they are already planning for an Origin squeeze. Friday night becomes the first test of whether that 10-month recovery can settle a position that has been waiting for a long-term answer.
