Alex Pearce explains 2021 nose piercing after AFL bubble pressure

alex pearce said his 2021 nose piercing was a deliberate break from the AFL bubble. He described it as something he did while bored at home during the COVID era, after buying a needle off eBay and going through with it himself.

The Fremantle captain said the decision was less about style than release. For a player who had been drafted to the Dockers as a fresh-faced 18-year-old from Tasmania, the piercing sat inside a wider push to define himself as more than the footballer inside the system.

Pearce and the AFL bubble

Pearce said he had thought about the piercing for a while before doing it in 2021, then made it happen with ice, a numb face and a couple of beers. The blunt method fits the point he was making: he wanted something outside the routine, not another managed football decision.

“I feel like it (the decision to go ahead with the piercing) was a bit of a, not quite a protest, but more a reaction to the AFL bubble, which can be so restrictive and confined and regimented and where everything's being watched and managed. It was more a oh, f*** it. I want to grow my hair long and do something different,” he said.

Identity Beyond Football

“Freedom” and “expression” were the two ideas Pearce used to describe how he wants to live. He said, “My whole childhood was centred around playing sport. And that was my whole identity.”

That helps explain why the piercing lands as more than a grooming note. Pearce said, “I've been in the space before where I'm simply the footballer who plays football, and that's all he does.” He added, “I was able to work out that for me to be at my best, I actually need to engage in other things.”

For Pearce, the practical takeaway is simple: identity outside football is not a vanity project, it is part of how he keeps himself performing at his best. The nose piercing is just the visible marker of that shift, and his own words make clear he sees it as a personal reset, not a one-off stunt.
