Vuković rejects history as Legia Warszawa – Widzew łódź faces relegation

Legia Warszawa – Widzew łódź meets Friday at 20.30 at Łazienkowska with relegation from Ekstraklasa on the line. For the first time in this rivalry, survival rather than a title decides the stakes, and Widzew coach Aleksandar Vuković said history will not matter.

Łazienkowska faces a different prize

That is the sharp break from the past. This fixture has lived off championship pressure before, but now both clubs are fighting to avoid the lower division, with Legia sitting near the bottom of the table and Widzew helping turn a classic into a survival match.

Vuković, who won six Polish championships connected with Legia as a player, assistant coach and head coach, knows the setting as well as anyone on the Widzew bench. His line before kickoff was simple: “historia nie będzie miała znaczenia.”

May 22, 1996 still lingers

The rivalry’s most famous chapter came on 22 May 1996, when Legia were already Polish champion and still lost 2:1 after leading 1:0. Marek Koniarek equalized for Widzew, and Piotr Szarpak scored the winner nine minutes before the end.

That match came two months after Legia reached the Champions League quarterfinals, where they lost the two-legged tie against Panathinaikos. It also came with a different ending for the club from Łódź: the 1995/96 league title went to Widzew.

Legia’s old scars return

The next meeting at Łazienkowska at the end of the 1996/97 season carried the same volatility. Legia led 2:0 until the 86th minute, then Sławomir Majak scored for Widzew, Dariusz Gęsior equalized in the 88th minute and Andrij Michalczuk finished the comeback in the 90th minute.

That match was called the “mecz wszech czasów” of the Polish league, and it is the clearest reminder of why this pair still draws attention. Legia also drew 3:3 with Real Madrid in November 2016, when Cristiano Ronaldo led Madrid, but the present fight is far less glamorous and far more immediate.

“Tak, degradacja do I ligi to jest niebyt.” That is the risk now hanging over Legia, and the club’s fall has become the story of a Friday night that once would have been about the title. If the points swing goes the wrong way, the old rivalry will carry a new consequence that neither side has lived through before.
