Donnie Yen Starts John Wick Caine Spin-Off Filming

Donnie Yen has started filming his john wick spin-off, and the actor-director marked the occasion with a clapperboard image and the words, “Here we go….” The project will center on Caine, the blind assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4, moving the franchise into another production phase after the spring 2025 CinemaCon announcement.

Donnie Yen and Caine

Yen is set to star in and direct the film, making this both a performance vehicle and a behind-the-camera test for one of the franchise’s most visible new characters. That combination gives the project a tighter creative identity than a standard expansion: the same name is driving the action on screen and on set.

Caine gives the spin-off a built-in story engine. He was forced out of retirement in John Wick: Chapter 4 to carry out a mission tied to the High Table, then secured his freedom by the end of the film. The new movie extends that thread rather than resetting it, which keeps the character’s stakes tied to what already happened in the main series.

Akira’s revenge path

Akira, played by Rina Sawayama, is still pursuing Caine for revenge over the death of her father, Shimazu Koji. That pursuit gives the spin-off a friction point that is already defined, not a setup that needs to be invented from scratch, and it suggests the film will keep one eye on consequences from the fourth installment rather than treating Caine as a clean break from it.

The continued use of Caine and Akira also gives the project a clearer business purpose than a brand-new character launch. The franchise began with the first film in 2014, and this spin-off arrives after the universe has already expanded through Ballerina, The Continental, and John Wick: Book of Rules.

A fifth mainline film is also in development, so this production is part of a larger build rather than a one-off detour. For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple: the Caine story has moved from announcement to production, and the next phase will be judged on whether Yen can carry the character’s momentum into a separate film while the franchise keeps widening around him.
