Flaherty Starts as Tigers Host Rangers in 6:40 p.m. ET Opener — Rangers Vs Tigers

Jack Flaherty took the ball Friday night as the Tigers opened rangers vs tigers at Comerica Park, starting a three-game series that began a six-game homestand in Detroit. The Rangers arrived a half-game behind the Tigers in the overall standings, so the opener carried immediate weight in the AL Central race and beyond.

Flaherty Gets Texas Again

Flaherty entered at 0-2 with a 5.33 ERA and drew Texas for the first time since May 10 of the previous year, when he allowed five runs in three innings. That earlier start set the sharpest point of comparison for Detroit’s right-hander, who needed a cleaner outing against a Texas lineup that came in with a real chance to tighten the standings gap.

MacKenzie Gore started for the Rangers, making his first appearance against Detroit as a Ranger. He came in at 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA, and his recent form had been less stable: a 6.14 ERA and 5.50 FIP over his previous three starts.

Detroit Returns Home At 10-2

The Tigers came back to Comerica Park after finishing a 4-5 interleague swing with a 5-2 win over the Braves in Atlanta on Thursday. That result stopped the trip from slipping further and sent Detroit home at 16-16, tied with the Cleveland Guardians atop the AL Central.

Home has been a different story. Detroit was 10-2 at Comerica Park and 5-6 against fellow AL opponents, a split that leaves Friday’s opener as more than just the first game of a series. It was also the first chance to defend a home record that had carried the Tigers back to the top of the division standings.

Comerica Park Opens The Stretch

The game started at 6:40 p.m. ET in Detroit, with the Boston Red Sox scheduled to visit next in the homestand. For the Tigers, the immediate task was simple: handle a Rangers team sitting just behind them in the standings and protect the kind of early-season edge that can disappear quickly over one series.

Texas also entered with one fewer win in one fewer game played, so Friday’s matchup was built around a narrow gap rather than a runaway lead. Flaherty had the assignment in the opener, and the numbers around him made the first night of the homestand a direct test of whether Detroit could keep its pace at home while staying level at the top of the AL Central.
