Investigators Issue More Than 40 Warrants in Friends Case
Investigators say two of Greg Biffle’s friends conspired to break into the empty home after his death and steal cash, guns and financial information. North Carolina authorities have issued more than 40 search warrants in the case, and the investigation has spread across multiple states.
Authorities reported the break-in at the Biffles’ home on Jan. 8, after an intruder spent nearly six hours inside the house the night before and into the following morning. Investigators say $30,000 in cash, two Glock handguns and NASCAR memorabilia were taken, while online access to bank, Venmo and PayPal accounts tied to the family was also obtained using personal information.

Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said the suspects did “a lot of planning in an attempt to make a financial gain” off the deaths. A detective wrote that a person seen on surveillance video appeared familiar with the large home’s layout, including the locations of cameras, closets and a safe room.
Evidence showed a cellphone and multiple devices were active on the property during the break-in, and investigators say phone numbers and email addresses were changed to gain control of funds. Money was allegedly transferred to accounts not belonging to the family and used for purchases, and at least one fraudulent check tied to Biffle’s business interests was cashed.
Dec. 18 crash
The case follows the Dec. 18 plane crash that killed Biffle, his wife Cristina and their two children. The crash remains under investigation by the NTSB. Investigators say the alleged thefts began less than a month later, after the family home was left empty.
Search warrants were later executed at two sites, one near the Biffles’ residence and another in a nearby county. That broad paper trail points to a case built from physical entry, digital account access and financial transactions, not just the burglary itself. For the family’s estate, the next step is in the evidence already collected across those searches.
