Bryson Stott Sparks Phillies' 3-2 Walk-Off Sweep
Bryson Stott lined a tying triple in the ninth inning and scored the winning run as the Phillies swept both games of a split doubleheader against the Giants on Thursday. The 3-2 finish in Game 1 helped Philadelphia finish a rare sweep built on late rallies, and the club moved to 12-19 after the doubleheader.
Stott Opens the Rally
With one out in the ninth, Stott drove in the tying run with a triple. He later crossed the plate on a two-out infield single by rookie Justin Crawford, turning Game 1 into the first half of a sweep the Giants could not close out.
That comeback fit the rest of the day. Kyle Schwarber tied Game 2 with a two-out double in the ninth, and Alec Bohm ended it with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning for a 6-5 win.
Phillies Make Rare History
The Phillies became the first team in 22 years to win both games of a doubleheader after trailing in the ninth inning or later. The last club to do that was the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Chicago Cubs on May 28, 2004, and that was also the last time any team walked off both games of a doubleheader.
Chase Shugart earned both wins, becoming the first pitcher to do that in a doubleheader since Brian Duensing for the Minnesota Twins against the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 9, 2013. Shugart said, "I'm a little riled up," and added, "Just a big moment in a big spot. And I feel like that's my first time in a big moment like that."
Schwarber's First-Inning Power
Schwarber homered in the first inning of each game and finished 5-for-6 with three runs scored, three RBIs and three walks. The last Phillies player with multiple first-inning home runs on a single day was Von Hayes on June 11, 1985, and the last to homer in the first inning of both halves of a doubleheader was Ron Northey on June 15, 1943, against the Boston Braves.
The sweep also extended Philadelphia's start under interim manager Don Mattingly to three straight wins after he took over for the fired Rob Thomson on Tuesday. The results gave the Phillies a jolt in the standings, but they still have work to do at 12-19.
