Roman Reigns Defends Title in Tampa at Backlash 2026
backlash 2026 now has its headline attraction: Roman Reigns is heading to Tampa on Saturday, May 9 to defend his newly captured World Heavyweight Championship. The event takes place inside Benchmark International Arena, and it will be his first Backlash appearance since 2022.
Roman Reigns Returns to Backlash
Reigns has agreed to face Jacob Fatu at Backlash, giving Tampa a title defense built around the champion’s first trip back to the event in four years. Fatu stepped up to him on Monday Night Raw with the goal of taking the World Title, setting the match in motion after Reigns’ latest championship win.
That timing gives the bout an immediate edge. Reigns arrives in Tampa as the newly crowned World Heavyweight Champion, while Fatu comes in after defeating Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 42. The matchup links the champion’s return with an opponent who already proved he could win on WWE’s biggest stage.
Bron Breakker And Seth Rollins
The Backlash card also includes Seth Rollins against Bron Breakker, a rematch carrying over from WrestleMania 42. Breakker returned to action there, hit Rollins with two spears, and cost him his match against Gunther. Their meeting in Tampa extends that issue after the pair had an earlier problem last October that Breakker says he wants to finish.
For Rollins, that adds another live test at the same event where Reigns is putting his title on the line. For Breakker, it is a chance to turn the WrestleMania interference into a direct result against the man he targeted.
Asuka Targets IYO SKY
Another match tied to Backlash centers on Asuka and IYO SKY. Asuka used to consider SKY part of her family, but she has felt betrayed since SKY befriended Rhea Ripley, and she has spent months taking her frustrations out on Kairi Sane.
Asuka has promised to end things with SKY by teaching her one final lesson in the ring. That puts a personal grudge on the same card as Reigns’ title defense and Rollins’ response to Breakker, giving Tampa multiple feuds with a clear finish line on May 9.
