More Than 25,000 Fill Sold-Out Bmo Marathon in Vancouver

More than 25,000 registrants have filled the sold-out bmo marathon weekend races in Vancouver. The full marathon, half marathon and 8 km fields are all full before the first Sunday of May, and the city is now set to manage closures across several neighbourhoods.

Vancouver streets and bridges

RUNVAN said temporary road closures and traffic control measures will be in place across Queen Elizabeth Park, Riley Park, South Cambie, Oakridge, Fairview, UBC, Endowment Lands, Dunbar, Southlands, Kerrisdale, Point Grey, Kitsilano, West End, Yaletown, Cambie, False Creek, Chinatown, downtown Vancouver and Coal Harbour. Road closures will start as early as midnight the night before and last through Sunday afternoon.

The Burrard Street Bridge southbound will be closed from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 3. The Cambie Street Bridge northbound will be closed throughout the day, while the Granville Street Bridge will remain open.

West Pender Street parking

West Pender Street will also be restricted in the morning of Sunday, May 3, between West Georgia Street and Burrard Street. No vehicle entrances or exits will be permitted during that time for residential towers and the Bentall Centre on West Pender Street.

RUNVAN said, "The Vancouver International Marathon Society would like to advise residents and business owners of temporary road closures and traffic control measures to accommodate this annual event on the first Sunday of May". It also said, "Your safety is taken seriously, and we respect the neighbourhoods through which the BMO Marathon Vancouver courses run. Please travel safely."

TransLink Sunday service

TransLink will operate on a Sunday schedule, and several bus routes will be modified to accommodate the marathon routes. That leaves drivers, transit riders and downtown visitors dealing with a tighter weekend map than usual, especially in the sections where bridge access and curb access are limited.
