Yze Backs Richmond's Perth Test — West Coast Vs Richmond

Richmond’s second trip to Perth this season brings west coast vs richmond to Optus Stadium on Saturday, and the Tigers are still looking for their first win of the season. Round 8 arrives with Richmond carrying the pressure of that record and the promise of a young list trying to turn sharp individual form into a result.

Yze Sees Two Young Sides

Adem Yze framed the matchup as a meeting of youth and talent, saying, "Two young teams, two highly talented teams going at it, and we can’t wait to get out there, perform, and show what we’ve got". He also pointed to West Coast's recent level, adding, "[West Coast] has been really impressive in a couple of their wins and competitive performances."

That sets the tone for a game Richmond cannot treat as a tune-up. West Coast has Harley Reid and Willem Duursma among its young core, with Josh Lindsay and Cooper Duff-Tytler also highlighted, while Richmond’s own younger names are trying to force their way into the discussion after Round 7.

Grlj And Cumming Lead The Push

Sam Grlj and Sam Cumming, both 2025 draftees, have given Richmond a clearer edge at selection. Grlj won the AFL Rising Star after his 21-disposal performance in Round 7, and Cumming backed up his debut with 13 disposals, five inside-50s and a goal.

Those numbers matter because Richmond has been searching for a way to convert promise into a win. Patrick Retschko, Kane McAuliffe and Tom Brown also had impressive efforts last week, and Yze has options such as Seth Campbell, Steely Green, Tom Burton, Oliver Hayes-Brown, Campbell Gray, Tyler Sonsie and James Trezise to lean on if he wants more energy around the ball and more finish inside 50.

Perth Contest Will Set Terms

Richmond’s best recent sign came in its Round 7 loss to Melbourne, when it kicked seven goals straight from stoppage, the fourth best rate in the AFL in Round 7. Ben Miller said on SEN on Friday morning that the key is controlling field position and getting rewards on the scoreboard, while Matthew Richardson put the contested side of the game at the center of Richmond’s task in Perth.

"If [Richmond] can be even, or just in front of contested possessions in Perth, [Richmond's] going to be right in the game for the whole game" Richardson said on Talking Tigers. That gives Saturday’s match a simple line: Richmond has to match West Coast’s young legs, win enough of the contest, and stop another Perth trip from becoming another missed chance.
