BoM Forecasts Rain for Southeast Australia Rain Forecast as Cold Front Arrives
The southeast australia rain forecast turns wetter and cooler for south-east Australia as a cold front moves in after record-breaking May warmth. The Bureau of Meteorology said the change will bring rain, thunderstorms and much cooler weather across the region over the weekend and into Monday.
Christie Johnson on Sunday
Christie Johnson, a Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist, said cooler air would extend across South Australia and into western Victoria on Sunday, with maximum temperatures dropping back into the high teens. She said the cold air would then make its way right across the south-east on Monday.
Johnson said there had been “unseasonably warm conditions over the last couple of weeks” and added, “And this will feel particularly cool … given the warm temperatures we’ve had recently.”
Record Warmth Across Four States
The front arrives after daytime temperatures on Friday ran 10 to 14C above average in parts of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. Dozens of stations recorded their warmest May day on record, with Geelong, Shepparton and Bendigo among the Victorian places that reached the high 20s.
Tasmania also posted extreme warmth, with Hobart reaching 26.9C and Launceston 24.3C. Night-time temperatures across parts of South Australia, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania and NSW were eight to 12C above average on Friday night, while Australia had its driest April since 2018.
Victoria, Tasmania and Sydney
The cold front over the Southern Ocean merged with a cloud band moving over Western Australia before sweeping across South Australia on Saturday and heading toward Victoria and Tasmania. Rain, windy conditions, thunderstorms and abnormally high tides are expected over south-eastern Australia over the weekend and into the start of next week, with a risk of severe storms, heavy rainfall and potentially flash flooding.
Sydney is forecast to miss the wintry blast, with temperatures expected to stay in the mid-20s most of the week. Its maximum is forecast to reach 26C on Sunday, followed by rain and 25C on Monday, while Melbourne is forecast to have rain all week, 23C on Sunday and 13C by Thursday.
