Embassy day dc will open 68 embassies to the public in Washington, D.C., on May 2, with free access from 9:30 AM to 5 PM as part of the annual Around the World Embassy Tour. Fourteen of those embassies will be grouped at the UDC Student Center in Van Ness, giving visitors a concentrated route through one of the day’s busiest stops.
Souvenir passports will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at Dupont Circle, the Mexican Cultural Institute, and the UDC Student Center. The Events DC app will provide real-time updates throughout the event, which also includes food, performances, and cultural displays across Washington, D.C.
UDC Student Center in Van Ness
The UDC Student Center stop brings several countries into one place. Visitors there can sample ropa vieja and moros y cristianos, while the Embassy of the Republic of Maldives will highlight island culture with traditional seafood snacks and Boduberu drum and dance performances. Visitors can also scan QR codes at the Maldives embassy to take recipes home.
Cuba is taking part in the tour for the first year, adding a new stop to the rotation. Egypt will show replicas of Pharaonic treasures and live music, while the Ethiopian embassy is inviting visitors to witness a traditional coffee ceremony that includes roasting and serving coffee.
Mexican Cultural Institute and Dupont Circle
The Mexican Cultural Institute will feature folkloric ballet, traditional Mariachi performances, guided tours, work by DC-based Mexican artist Paloma Vianey, and Mexican handicrafts for sale. Visitors can also pick up souvenir passports there, one of three locations set up for the day.
Other stops will spread the tour well beyond one building. The Korean Cultural Center will offer movie-inspired performances, choreography lessons, a sing-along, and a keychain-making station inspired by gat hats, while one embassy will place a real Arabian horse in the parking lot and add dancing and henna painting inside.
Passport DC stops across Washington
Several embassies will use food and performance to draw visitors through the day. One stop will showcase arts and crafts and serve dishes from the country’s street food culture, while another will feature musical genres such as Wilders and Cadre, traditional foods from a dual-island nation, and raffle prizes that include flights to the islands.
Visitors can also spend time at both the Thai House and the Thai garden, where the schedule includes a Thai massage, traditional dance, and Muay Thai martial arts demonstrations. At another stop, an embassy working with World Central Kitchen will host an 11 AM talk about aid work in Ukraine, along with borscht and a photo exhibition about World Central Kitchen in Ukraine.
For anyone planning a route, the practical choice is to start early, secure a souvenir passport at one of the three distribution points, and use the Events DC app to track updates while moving between the 12 stops and the concentrated Van Ness cluster.
