Christian Fuchs Urges Focus Before Barrow Vs Newport County
Christian Fuchs says Newport County must focus on themselves before barrow vs newport county on Saturday, 2 May, with League Two relegation still possible. Newport are one of five sides who could finish in the bottom two, so the game at Barrow carries survival weight without needing any extra drama to sell it.
Fuchs Sets Newport County’s Task
“It’s definitely a tough situation for them, but we have to look at ourselves,” Fuchs said ahead of the 15:00 BST kick-off in Cumbria. He added: “Our destiny is in our own hands, so we need to make sure that we are on the right end of everything that is going to happen on Saturday.”
That message gives Newport a simple route into the final day. Barrow are bottom of League Two and need a win plus an eight-goal swing to keep their status in the division, while Newport only need to manage their own result and avoid being pulled into the bottom two.
Barrow Face the Numbers
Barrow lost 3-0 away at Cambridge last weekend, leaving them with an even narrower path to survival. Fuchs said he expects them to start fast, but he kept the focus on Newport’s response rather than Barrow’s mood.
“I think they will try to push hard initially, but it’s all assumptions, we don’t actually know what state of mind they are in right now,” he said. “It’s down to us and how we approach the game to make sure if there is a weird atmosphere, we make it even more weird.”
That is the complication for Newport: the pressure sits on both sides, but the table gives Barrow the steeper climb. Five clubs can still finish in the bottom two, so Newport’s job is not to chase combinations elsewhere but to handle the match in front of them.
Oldham Win, Barrow Trip
Newport go there after beating 10-man Oldham 3-2 in their penultimate game. Bobby Kamwa missed an injury-time penalty before scoring the decisive goal in the 108th minute, a swing that kept Newport alive going into the last round.
The away support will be significant too. Newport will be backed by a sold-out away end of 930 Exiles fans on the 270-mile trip to Cumbria, and Fuchs pointed to that commitment after the Oldham win.
“The support was incredible at Cheltenham as well and it just shows how dedicated our fans are, because that’s a very long trip to Barrow,” he said. “It feels really good and I think the fans taking this trip, they deserve to walk away with three points.” For Newport, that leaves one task: play the game, take care of the result, and stay clear of the bottom two.
