Joe Buck will host ESPN Jeopardy! as summer shoot nears

Joe Buck will host jeopardy! when Jeopardy! streams on Disney+ and Hulu this summer. The project puts an face on a format that usually runs half an hour, and this version is built around a one-hour structure with Triple Jeopardy.

Buck’s 2021 Jeopardy! turn

Buck said, “Yeah, I’m excited,” while discussing the show on Is This A Great Game, Or What? with Tim Kurkjian. He also said, “The difference is with this show — not to get too in the weeds — is it’s an hour-long show,” and added, “There’s Triple Jeopardy in this.”

He previously served as a guest host in 2021 during the post-Alex Trebek fill-in period. That matters because he is not walking into the role cold; he has already spent time inside a franchise that treats wording and timing as part of the product.

The contestants will be predominantly personalities, and the show will not be open to the general public. That choice turns the special into a company-facing event rather than a broad casting call, with the participant pool narrowed to names viewers already know from the network.

Buck said the format is designed to get to know the contestants more than the standard Jeopardy! setup. He also said, “What you realize when you do Jeopardy! is it is so special to people who are lifers with that show that if you take it in any different direction or you don’t use the exact words that Alex used, you’re going to fail,” and underscored the language rules by noting, “It’s not a bet, it’s a wager.”

Next week’s shoot

Jeopardy! is scheduled to shoot next week, with a summer streaming window on Disney+ and Hulu. The production comes after Dan Patrick’s Sports Jeopardy!, which ran for three seasons on Crackle and produced 116 episodes with regular fans competing.

For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple: this is not a standard episode run, and it is not built for ordinary contestants. It is a one-hour -branded special with Triple Jeopardy, a narrower cast of players, and Buck back in the host role after his 2021 test run.
