Billy Loughnane Wins First Classic at Goodwood Races on Bow Echo
Billy Loughnane won his first Classic at goodwood races on Bow Echo, and the 20-year-old finished the Betfred 2,000 Guineas with a decisive burst from the Dip to beat Gstaad at Newmarket. The victory was his second Group 1 and Bow Echo’s fourth straight success.
The race turned in the final stages. Bow Echo produced a sustained acceleration when it mattered most, while Gstaad had no answer once Loughnane asked for more. Distant Storm was eight lengths behind the runner-up in third, underlining how sharply the front pair drew clear.
Bow Echo Seals Newmarket
Sent off 9-2 third favourite, Bow Echo beat the week’s market mover and did so on his first start as a three-year-old. That made the result more than a breakthrough ride for Loughnane; it also extended an unbeaten record that had already marked Bow Echo as a horse moving into deeper company.
Gstaad went off favourite after money came for him during the week, but the market shift did not hold up once the runners hit the Dip. Bow Echo’s move was the one that stuck, and the result gave the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s colours another major win on the Newmarket Rowley Mile.
George Boughey And Cachet
George Boughey collected his second Group 1 and his second Guineas, having previously won the 1,000 Guineas with Cachet. He also ruled out stepping Bow Echo up in trip for the Betfred Derby, with the colt not entered for the race.
Boughey said, “He was good, wasn’t he? I thought he might do that. His work has been incredibly good. Luckily he is as good as we thought he was.” He added, “Billy gave him a beautiful ride, he waited as long as I wanted.”
Loughnane’s First Classic
Loughnane said, “I've wanted to be a jockey since the day I was born and competing in these races is what you want.” He added, “To find a horse like this at 20 years old is a dream come true.”
The ride carried extra weight for him because he had been riding out for Boughey since he was 16 years old and a seven-pound claimer. After this, the meeting left him with a first Classic, a second Group 1, and the sort of record that puts Bow Echo firmly among the leading milers of his generation.
