Donald Tusk urges Karol Nawrocki to obey current constitution
donald tusk told Karol Nawrocki to begin with the current constitution after the president announced work on a new one. In a post, the prime minister wrote: "Pan Karol Nawrocki ogłosił, że będzie pracował nad nową konstytucją. Proponuję zacząć od przestrzegania aktualnej".
The exchange put Poland’s constitutional order back into public view, with Nawrocki’s office saying work on a new basic law is being organized and that the draft is meant to be finished by the end of his presidency. The first members of the Council for a new constitution are to be appointed on May 3.
Tusk and Nawrocki
Tusk’s remark was a direct reaction to Nawrocki’s announcement that he would work on a new constitution. The prime minister did not set out his own plan for the constitutional process; instead, he used the announcement to push Nawrocki toward the rules already in force.
Marcin Przydacz answered on behalf of the president’s side. He wrote: "Dobra, to my pracujemy nad nową, lepszą konstytucją dla Polski. A pan, zgodnie z własną propozycją, zaczyna przestrzegać przepisy aktualnej. Deal? PS. Proszę nie zapominać o ustawach. Też musi pan ich przestrzegać. Ustawach, nie uchwałach!"
President’s Council on May 3
Rafał Leśkiewicz said the first members of the Council for a new constitution at the President of the Republic of Poland will be appointed on May 3. The council is to include representatives of parliamentary clubs and circles as well as experts, and its goal is to draft a new constitution.
That design gives the presidency a formal mechanism for building a draft, but it also puts the process into a political setting that already has a public dispute attached to it. The president’s office is preparing the council while the prime minister is publicly challenging the order in which the project should begin.
Drafting the new constitution
The planned work is set to run until the end of Karol Nawrocki’s presidency. That timeline means the constitutional project is not framed as a one-off announcement but as a longer process that will move through the council’s appointments and its drafting work over the remainder of the term.
For now, the practical next step is the May 3 appointment of the first council members. Nawrocki’s office is building the body that would prepare the draft, while Tusk has already made clear that he wants the president to start from the constitution already in force.
