Mastroeni Says RSL Tightens Structure Before Portland Vs Real Salt Lake
Real Salt Lake heads into portland vs real salt lake after two straight losses, and Pablo Mastroeni says the response starts with structure and the little moments that decide games. The group has conceded four goals in those two matches, but only one came from open play.
Mastroeni’s structure push
“When you have a couple defeats, it forces you to focus more on your structure … the little moments in games that are deciding,” Mastroeni said, laying out the tight margin RSL is working inside this week. That lines up with the way the club has described the recent losses: narrow, shaped by controversial moments, and not a sign of a wholesale collapse.
RSL’s aggressive, front-foot approach is still in place, but the defensive structure has to hold inside it. The club says that balance has made its identity feel consistent for the first time since 2024, a sharp contrast with the 2025 setup that left it defending with four in the back and attacking with three.
Winston Ha’s locker-room jolt
Before Tuesday’s training session, equipment manager intern Winston Ha addressed the team in the center of the circle and said, “Don’t train to win, train until you can’t lose anymore.” Players and coaches answered with clapping and shouting, and Griffin Dillon later earned the player-voted wrestling belt for top performer on the day.
“It was intense,” Dillon said, after a session that also featured players celebrating finishes and saves and pushing each other during play. That energy fits the message from the coach: the work now is less about broad change than about cleaning up the moments that have tilted the last two results.
Cabral’s save and RSL’s edge
Rafa Cabral’s recent form is part of that edge. Two weeks ago, he won RSL’s Defensive Play of the Month for stopping Anders Dreyer at the near post, and on April 29, 2026, the club posted a clip of the save.
That matters because RSL has already pointed to its breakdowns as situational rather than systemic. The task against Portland is to turn that into a cleaner performance, with the back line keeping shape while the attack stays aggressive enough to match the club’s preferred identity.
