Colin Farrell Joins Ralph Fiennes in Art Film Adaptation

colin farrell is teaming with Ralph Fiennes and Wagner Moura on Art, an English-language adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s play. Fernando Meirelles is set to direct the comedy, with sales for the project launching at the Cannes market through Patrick Wachsberger’s 193.

Meirelles Reunites With Three Leads

Fiennes, Farrell and Moura bring a built-in reunion factor to the package. Meirelles worked with Fiennes on The Constant Gardener, with Farrell on the Apple series Sugar, and has produced multiple projects starring Moura, including VIPs.

Christopher Hampton adapted the screenplay, keeping the project inside a line of awards-season talent rather than a generic prestige package. That combination matters because the film is being sold as a finished creative assembly, not a speculative rights play.

Yasmina Reza's 1994 Play

Art opened in Paris in 1994 and later played in London’s West End, on Broadway and in Sydney, Australia. The play follows three long-time friends, Serge, Marc and Yvan, and the most recent Broadway version starred Bobby Cannavale, James Corden and Neil Patrick Harris.

That stage history gives the film an established title with repeat production value, which is why the casting lands as business news as much as creative news. A work that has already moved across major theater markets arrives with built-in recognition, while the film still has to translate a three-person play into a feature format.

Cannes Market Sales Start

193 is launching sales for the film at the Cannes market, putting the adaptation in front of buyers while the cast and director are already attached. Charles Finch and Tracy Seaward are producing.

The immediate hurdle is not whether the title has pedigree; it does. The practical test is whether distributors buy into an English-language version led by three Oscar-nominated actors and Meirelles, a director with established ties to all three leads.
