1987 Put Freeman on Screen
1987’s Street Smart gave Freeman his big-screen breakthrough and his first Oscar nomination. He did not become a known quantity in cinema until he was 50, and he has said his number one goal in Hollywood is to get that bag, which helps explain why theater was never going to be his default lane for long.
1990 was the last time he had worked the stage before that Broadway return, finishing a month-long run of The Taming of the Shrew in New York. He then stayed away for 18 years, a gap that made the 2008 comeback feel less like a reset than a test he did not want to repeat.

2008 brought Freeman back opposite McDormand in the Broadway revival of The Country Girl. He said, “When I went back there,” and added, “There were times I said to myself, ‘Why am I doing this?'” That kind of second-guessing is the real story here: a screen actor with a late-blooming film career had little reason to accept stage economics that pay nowhere near as much as movies.
One night, he said, “I forgot all my lines and started babbling,” then caught a break because “the scene was one in which I’m supposed to babble.” He described telling McDormand, “I’m lost, and I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing,” before concluding, “But afterwards, I thought, ‘Who needs that?'”
2011 Closed the Door
2011 was Freeman’s last time on stage, when he played a major role in the original production of Dustin Lance Black’s 8. He drew the practical comparison himself: “On a movie, they’d just say ‘cut’ and we’d do it again,” which is the bluntest answer in the whole story. Freeman was not rejecting performance; he was rejecting the risk profile of live theater after a return that left him unwilling to make it a habit.
