Mats Sundin Linked to Maple Leafs Front Office Role

mats sundin is being considered for an as-yet undefined role in the Maple Leafs’ future front office as the club’s management search moves forward. Keith Pelley relieved Brad Treliving of his duties as general manager more than a month ago, and the search has now narrowed to a picture that includes Sundin, John Chayka and other voices around the process.

Maple Leafs search with Sundin

The front-office plan is still taking shape, but Sundin is part of it. Tie Domi is also involved in the search, and Gary Roberts has spoken to the team as part of the process. Pelley has led interviews, while Humza Teherany has played a key role and Neil Glasberg has been around the interview process.

That search has already knocked out several candidates after in-person interviews in Toronto last week. Evan Gold, Ryan Martin and Mike Futa were ruled out, and Mike Gillis has not been part of the later stages of the GM interview process.

Chayka and Domi roles

Chayka may be alongside Sundin in the future front office, giving the club a second major name to consider alongside the former captain. Domi has established relationships with Pelley and Chayka, and his family link runs through Max Domi, who played for the Coyotes when Chayka was general manager there.

MLSE also requested permission to speak to at least one general manager currently working for another team, but that request was denied. The company did not formally seek permission to speak to St. Louis Blues executive Doug Armstrong.

Berube and Matthews

The interviews have also made clear that Craig Berube’s future will be decided after the new front office is in place. Keeping Auston Matthews and William Nylander in Toronto has been noted as a priority, with Matthews rehabbing from knee surgery in Arizona and not directly involved in the hiring process.

That leaves the next decision-makers with real pressure on more than one front. The front office they build will help set the course for the coach and for two of the club’s biggest names, while Scott White remains in the mix and has not been told he is out of the running.
