Louis Partridge Carries Olivia Rodrigo’s Miranda and Steve Song Inspiration

louis partridge aside, Olivia Rodrigo said multiple songs on her forthcoming album were inspired by Miranda Hobbs and Steve Brady from Sex and the City. She made the reveal on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where she tied the writing to her third full-length album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.

Rodrigo said there are actually multiple songs that are inspired by Miranda and Steve, and that she wanted the record to lean into romantic love rather than the heartbreak and angst of her last two albums. She also said the album’s first single, Drop Dead, is about a “really awesome first date” and represents “the first step” of the LP.

Miranda, Steve, and a love-song pivot

The shift is sharper because Rodrigo linked it to a specific viewing habit: “It’s my favorite show,” she said of Sex and the City, adding, “I think I’ve watched every single episode maybe three times.” That is a deliberate creative reference, not a loose mood board; she described remembering Miranda and Steve getting back together and thinking, “Oh my God, I have to write a song about this.”

Rodrigo’s comments also place the album in a clearer lane than her last two releases. She said she wanted the love songs to carry “sadness, longing, and melancholy,” and she named the Cure’s Love Song and Lana Del Rey’s Video Games as favorites in that mode. For listeners, that suggests the album is not pivoting away from emotional conflict so much as packaging it inside songs about romance instead of breakup aftermath.

Drop Dead Opens the LP

Drop Dead is the only single Rodrigo has shared so far, and she described it as the record’s opening move. That matters because the first track released from a pop album often sets the audience’s expectations for the rest of the project, especially when the artist says the rest of the LP will go “in lots of different places” after that first chapter.

Rodrigo will release You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love on June 12, giving her team a date to build toward after the current single cycle. She also said she will perform Drop Dead on Saturday Night Live this weekend alongside another new track, and she has an upcoming tour in 2026 after saying, “I’ve been working so hard on it” and “I’m so stoked to play these songs live.”

June 12 and 2026

The sequence is straightforward: one single now, a full album on June 12, and live promotion beginning with Saturday Night Live this weekend before the 2026 tour. For Rodrigo, that rollout turns a personal TV reference into a broader campaign for a third full-length album built around love songs with a melancholy edge.
