Daniel Negreanu Criticizes Public Outing of David Peters Over $50,000 Debt

daniel negreanu pushed back on the public airing of a poker debt dispute involving David Peters, saying high-stakes money problems should not be handled on social media. He said he would rather see those matters settled privately, even as he drew a line between players who are short on cash and those who are scamming.

Negreanu On Linde And Peters

Negreanu discussed Dylan Linde’s decision to expose Peters in a YouTube video, where Linde said Peters had paid $27,000 of a $50,000 debt tied to buying tournament action. Peters, who has $50 million in live tournament cashes, later apologized for failing to clear the balance.

Within four minutes of the video, Negreanu said, “Sometimes they run short on available cash.” He added, “I'm a little more old-school with stuff like that, and I kind of like to differentiate the difference between people who are broke and cannot pay, and people who are scamming.”

High-Roller Liquidity Issues

He said many high-stakes players have liquidity issues because money is tied up in investments and backing other players, which is part of why he bristled at the public callout. Negreanu said Peters acknowledged the debt, was paying it, and was doing his best while struggling, then added, “That's not something I'd do.”

That view put him at odds with critics who believe top pros with huge live earnings should always have money on hand. Negreanu said he has a “soft spot for people like that” when they are trying to pay, but he also said the poker community has a responsibility to out scammers.

Social Media Pressure

Peters’ payments came in pieces: $12,000 in February and another $15,000 on April 1 before he said he could not pay the rest. Negreanu described critics who “take glee and happiness” in seeing a high roller strapped for cash, while Mike Matusow has called those earnings “fake.”

The dispute leaves the poker crowd with a familiar split between private debt collection and public pressure. Negreanu’s line was clear: expose scams, but do not rush every unpaid balance onto Twitter.
