Loughnane Wins 2,000 Guineas on Bow Echo at Newmarket

Billy Loughnane won his first Classic as Bow Echo took the 2,000 Guineas at newmarket on 3 May 2026. The 20-year-old finished two-and-three-quarter lengths clear, giving George Boughey the Guineas double and putting Bow Echo on course for top mile races.

Bow Echo was sent off a 9-2 chance and handled the first Classic of the season with authority. Gstaad and Distant Storm, the 3-1 joint-favourites, filled the places in second and third.

After the race, Loughnane said, "I’ve wanted to be a jockey ever since I could talk, and I’ve put so much work into being where I am today and I’m very fortunate to ride a horse like Bow Echo. He’s an absolute star, a dream to ride. I planned the race out going a million different directions but it was the perfect A to B, what a feeling." He added, "He’d had a perfect preparation into the race and George is a genius."

George Boughey’s Guineas Double

Boughey won the 1,000 Guineas in 2022, and Bow Echo’s success completed his Guineas double at 34. He called the horse, "so unassuming," and said, "This horse has the most extraordinary brain, he’s so unassuming and he makes my job easy," while noting that the plan was for Billy to execute after strong work at home.

He also said, "The confidence was pretty high and his work had suggested that. It was over to Billy to execute and he did, he was fast asleep going to post and Billy has a great affinity with this horse." Boughey added, "I think he’s almost a difficult ride as he’s so relaxed, and to wait and not commit in a Guineas when he was fast asleep out there, trying to pick his gap, he’s executed his plan brilliantly."

St James’s Palace Stakes Next

Bow Echo is likely to run next in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot next month, where he is already an even-money favourite with Paddy Power. Gstaad is a 4-1 chance to reverse the form, and Boughey regards Bow Echo as a miler rather than a Triple Crown horse.

The colt was bred by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid al Maktoum, who died in December 2025. His colours were a familiar sight in British winner’s enclosures for 30 years, and Bow Echo has now carried that record into the season’s biggest early mile prize.
