Diogo Costa Honors Diogo Jota as Porto Seal 31st Title

Diogo Costa wore a Porto shirt with diogo jota’s name and the number 19 as FC Porto celebrated their 31st league title on Saturday. The captain also dedicated the trophy to Jota, his brother Andre Silva and their family after Porto closed the season with a 1-0 win over Alverca.

Porto Seal 31st Title

Porto knew a draw or victory would be enough to clinch the title, and they delivered the result they needed. The 1-0 win over Alverca finished a title run that came after dropped points from Sporting Clube de Portugal and Benfica.

Costa made the tribute visible during the celebrations. He said, “[This is for] our Portista [Porto fan] and dear Diogo Jota and his brother.” He added, “For me, he was a national team-mate, but he also played here.”

Costa’s Shirt Tribute

The shirt carried Jota’s name and number 19, turning the title celebration into a public salute to a player who had once worn Porto colors and represented Portugal alongside Costa. Costa said, “I knew he was a huge Portista and we want to dedicate this league trophy to him, his brother and their family.”

In a separate interview with Sport TV, he said, “There's so much to say, so much to remember. Our Jorge, our president, personally, Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva... It's a mix of sadness and happiness at the same time.” The title arrived in a season where Porto’s recent 12 months were also marked by the deaths of former president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa and former captain Jorge Costa.

Jota’s Loss Still Felt

The tribute carried added weight because Jota and his brother died in a car crash in Spain in July last year. Before that, he had undergone minor lung surgery in Porto and was on the way back to Liverpool for pre-season training, having first planned to fly before changing to ferry travel from Santander on medical advice.

Just days before his death, Jota had married Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children. Liverpool later said in its March accounts that it expected to recognise a £14.4million impairment of remaining registration costs for Diogo and other associated costs in the reporting period ending 31 May 2026, and the club retired his No. 20 shirt as a mark of respect. Porto’s latest title gave Costa a trophy to hold, but his shirt made clear who he wanted to place beside it.
