Barcelona Face Bayern Munich for Uefa Women's Champions League Final Spot
Barcelona and Bayern Munich go into their uefa women's champions league semifinal second leg level 1-1 on aggregate, with a place in the final in Oslo on 23 May on the line. The winner will face Lyon after they beat Arsenal 4-3 on aggregate.
Pere Romeu Sets Barcelona Tone
Barcelona coach Pere Romeu said the team would come out fighting from the first minute and lean on their fans, a clear sign the home side expects the tie to be decided by intensity as much as control. He also said the team is defined by its style of play and ambition to compete.
Romeu added that the closer score against Bayern changed the mood from the quarter-final against Real Madrid. "If the previous scenario motivated us [the quarter-final against Real Madrid], imagine how we'll feel now with a closer score. We're going to come out fighting from the first minute, and the support of our fans will be a huge boost."
Bayern Munich Chasing Away Form
Jose Barcala pointed to Barcelona's demands on every level, saying: "Barcelona demand a lot from you on every level, structurally, technically and in duels. You have to occupy as much space as possible. The idea is to have the right positioning to allow us to be in the right place at the right time, with a positional advantage."
He also framed Bayern's task plainly. "The pressure is on Barcelona. We're having an extraordinary campaign and we're very motivated coming into this game. We went from losing 7-1 [to Barcelona on matchday one] to a 1-1 draw [in the semi-final first leg]. It will be more difficult [playing away], but we're aiming to show our best."
Lyon Wait in Oslo
Lyon's path to the final was more painful. They edged Arsenal 4-3 on aggregate after Jule Brand scored an 87th-minute winner, despite Arsenal having led the tie 2-1 after the first leg.
Wendie Renard scored a penalty, Kadidiatou Diani added a back-post goal and Alessia Russo levelled the tie before Brand's late curling effort ended Arsenal's bid to become the first British side to reach back-to-back Women's Champions League finals.
For Barcelona and Bayern, the job is immediate: settle the tie at 15:30 BST and earn the right to play Lyon on 23 May. Barcelona arrive with the memory of a 7-1 win on matchday one, but Bayern have already narrowed that gap to one goal on aggregate.
