Zirkzee Seeks Guarantees to Stay at Manchester United
Joshua Zirkzee may still stay at Manchester United if he gets guarantees about his role next season. The 24-year-old has been starved of playing time, and his future has shifted from expected exit to conditional stay. Zirkzee loves being at United, but he wants clarity before deciding whether to close the door on a summer move.
Zirkzee and Manchester United
Zirkzee joined Manchester United from Bologna in the summer of 2024 for £36.5 million and has made 71 appearances for the club. In that time, he has scored nine goals and provided four assists, a return that now sits beside a bigger question about how he fits into the squad next season.
Fabrizio Romano said Zirkzee remains determined to succeed at Manchester United. That determination is tied to a simple condition: guarantees about his role. Without them, the forward is still expected by most sources in England and Italy to leave in the summer, with several top Serie A clubs already showing interest.
Michael Carrick and the role battle
The competition around him has tightened. Zirkzee was relegated to the bench after the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo, and Michael Carrick's appointment reduced his minutes even further. He is also competing with Amad Diallo for playing time, leaving him in a fight for one of only three starting roles among four attackers.
That is why talks could matter. Zirkzee is expected to hold discussions with Carrick if he is confirmed as head coach, and those conversations will shape whether he stays in Manchester or moves on. He came to United under Erik ten Hag, was used by Ruben Amorim at times last season, and has now reached the point where a promise of a bigger role may decide his next step.
Serie A clubs wait
The pressure on the decision is obvious. A player who has already logged 71 United appearances does not need a fresh start for the sake of change; he needs a reason to believe his next season will look different from the one he has just had.
That is where the guarantees come in. If United cannot offer them, the summer exit many in England and Italy expect becomes the likelier outcome. If they can, Zirkzee may yet stay where he says he loves being, with the final choice resting on his role rather than his desire to wear the shirt.
