Glenn Hoddle Hails Strand Larsen's 84th-Minute Finish in 3-1 Win

glenn hoddle singled out Jorgen Strand Larsen’s 84th-minute chip in Crystal Palace’s 3-1 first-leg win over Shakhtar Donetsk, saying the finish had the calmness of a goal that would draw attention if Harry Kane had scored it. The goal pushed Palace closer to a place in the Europa Conference League final.

Strand Larsen’s 84th-minute finish

Strand Larsen came off the bench in the 65th minute and needed just one clear opening to make the score 3-1. Daichi Kamada found him with a through ball, and the striker cut inside a sliding defender before lifting the ball over Dmytro Riznyk.

Hoddle’s reaction was direct: “We were not sure if he had had a touch and that is what is impressive, the calmness and then to dink it into the corner… if that was Harry Kane scoring that goal we would all be saying ‘wow, what a beautiful goal’.”

Palace and the £48 million signing

The finish carried extra weight because Strand Larsen joined Palace in January in a deal worth up to £48 million. He had scored three goals in his first 14 games for the club, and his previous goal had come in March, so the late strike arrived at a point when his return had drawn scrutiny.

That scrutiny has also come from Palace’s attacking options around him, with Jean-Philippe Mateta competing for minutes and Ismaila Sarr, Brennan Johnson and Yeremy Pino all part of the forward group. Against Shakhtar, though, it was Strand Larsen who delivered the cleanest end product when Palace needed another goal to control the tie.

Conference League pressure

Crystal Palace led 3-1 in the first leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final, and that margin leaves them with real control before the return leg. Ismaila Sarr also moved level with Marius Mouandilmadji and Mikael Ishak in the Conference League golden boot race on eight goals, adding another marker to a night that strengthened Palace’s position on more than one front.

If Palace finish the job and reach Thursday’s final, they could still have two more games to play in the competition.
