Ross Barkley Attracts Coventry City Interest as Villa Contract Runs Down

Ross Barkley is drawing Coventry City interest as his Aston Villa contract runs to the end of the season. The 32-year-old could become available for a summer move if Villa do not take up their one-year contract extension option. That puts Coventry in position to target a Premier League midfielder with a clear route out of Villa Park.

Frank Lampard and Barkley

Frank Lampard already knows what Barkley can bring. During his time as Chelsea manager, he said midfield players who can go by a player and who can use right and left foot and conjure a moment out of nothing are gold.

Barkley also has recent numbers that explain why another Championship club would look at him. He played for Luton Town in the 2023-24 Premier League season, scoring five goals and making five assists in 32 matches before joining Aston Villa after that spell.

Aston Villa’s contract call

At Villa, Barkley has been in the mix when injury has not ruled him out. Unai Emery said after a victory against Leicester City, “Today I am also very happy with Ross Barkley. He was fantastic in the minutes he played.”

That form leaves Aston Villa with a decision to make on the one-year contract extension option. Alan Nixon reported Villa have set their sights on a summer move for Barkley, while Coventry are now plotting their own move for him at the end of the season.

Coventry’s summer plan

The fit is straightforward for Coventry. Barkley brings Premier League experience, and Coventry are looking at a summer addition who can add quality in midfield without waiting for a long recruitment cycle to play out.

Coventry’s interest also sits alongside another Villa name in the conversation. Bryan King suggested the club could be interested in Lamare Bogarde and said £15m would be a good sale for him, with the 25 Premier League appearances and 40 outings in all competitions that Bogarde has posted this season giving Villa another squad issue to sort out.

For Barkley, the next step is tied to Villa’s contract decision and Coventry’s push. If the extension is not taken up, the summer market opens a clean path for a move that suits both clubs’ planning.
