Election Commission Counts 5 State Votes May 4 — Eci Result 2026
The Election Commission of India began eci result 2026 counting on May 4 for assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. Vote counting was expected to start at 8 am, with the outcome likely to be clear by evening.
The first figures were to come from postal ballots before Electronic Voting Machines were opened about 30 minutes later. In West Bengal, all 285 polling stations in the Falta assembly seat were scheduled for repolling on May 21, leaving that seat out of the May 4 count.
West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu
West Bengal has 294 assembly seats, including Falta, and its majority mark is 148. The state went through two phases of polling, with the first on April 23 and the final phase on April 29. A total of 2,926 candidates were in the fray across both phases.
Tamil Nadu has 243 assembly seats and a majority mark of 118. It voted on April 23, and 4,023 candidates contested the polls. MK Stalin was contesting from Kolathur, while the counting process on May 4 covered the rest of the state’s result set.
Kerala, Assam and Puducherry
Kerala has a 140-member assembly with a majority mark of 71, while Assam has 126 seats and a majority mark of 64. Puducherry has 30 seats and a majority mark of 16. Kerala, Assam and Puducherry all voted on April 9.
Assam had 722 candidates in the race, Kerala had 883 and Puducherry had 294. Himanta Biswa Sarma was contesting the Jalukbari seat in Assam, Pinarayi Vijayan was contesting Dharmadam in Kerala and N Rangasamy was contesting in Puducherry.
Falta Seat Count
The West Bengal count drew extra attention because Falta was set aside for repolling on May 21. Mamata Banerjee was contesting Bhabanipur in Bengal against BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, and the broader count covered one of the largest assemblies in the set.
For voters and candidates in the five contests, May 4 was the point when the ballots moved from campaign claims to tabulated totals. The result picture was expected to settle by evening, except for Falta, where the repolling date kept one Bengal seat outside the day’s outcome.
