James Hopes Named Sixers Head Coach on Two-Year Deal
james hopes has been named Sydney Sixers head coach on a two-year contract, taking charge of one of the BBL’s most successful clubs for the first time in his coaching career. The appointment comes after Greg Shipperd was sacked in January and gives the Sixers a new voice after they finished runners-up last summer.
Sixers Move After January Shake-up
The Sixers did not wait long after January’s coaching change to settle on Hopes. His first head coach role arrives with a team that has reached the BBL deciding game eight times and won three championships, plus finals appearances in 12 of the league’s 15 seasons.
That record sets a high bar for the new coach. The Sixers are not rebuilding from scratch; they are asking Hopes to keep a club near the top after Shipperd’s exit and a season that ended one step short of the title.
Hopes Brings Domestic Depth
Hopes arrives with a long resume across Australian and franchise cricket. He played 84 ODIs and 12 T20Is for Australia between 2005 and 2010, captained Queensland to the Sheffield Shield title in the 2011-12 summer, and led them to One-Day Cup titles in the following two seasons.
He has also worked as bowling coach for Punjab Kings in India and Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket, and has previous Big Bash experience with the Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes, as well as a stint with Delhi Capitals in the IPL. That mix of domestic and franchise work is the background the Sixers are betting on as they hand him his first full head coach post.
Haynes Sees New Chapter
Rachel Haynes called the move “an exciting new chapter” and described Hopes as “an exceptional cricket mind with a proven track record of developing players and building high-performing environments.” She added: “His depth of experience across Australian domestic cricket and international franchise competitions makes him an outstanding fit for the Sixers.”
For a club that has spent most of its life in the finals mix, the task is straightforward but demanding: keep winning without the coach who guided them through January. Hopes steps into that job with a two-year deal and immediate pressure to match a record that has already produced three championships.
