Derek Gaerke Says 64 Calves Stolen Mercer County Overnight
Sixty-four calves stolen mercer county was the result of an overnight theft near Coldwater, Ohio, where 64 freshly weaned 13 week old Holstein calves were taken from a farm near the southeast corner of 219 and Coldwater Creek Road. The calves were being started by Selhorst Farms on behalf of Gaerke Brother Farms.
The theft happened between 10pm on May 2nd and 6am on May 3rd. Police have been on site and are conducting an investigation, while Derek Gaerke asked anyone who saw anything or had any ideas to contact him immediately.

Gaerke said sale barns should be on the lookout for the calves. Most of the calves tails are off, which gives buyers and handlers a specific detail to watch for if the animals turn up for sale elsewhere.
The calves were in a turkey barn converted into a calf starter barn. That setup meant the animals were being held in a place used to begin their development, not in a standard open lot or pasture.

Gaerke also wrote that the phrase “it will never happen to us” no longer applies. He thanked the local police department for its quick response after the theft was discovered.
For anyone in the area, the practical step is straightforward: report anything unusual tied to 64 Holstein calves, and watch sale barns for animals matching the description Gaerke posted.
