Romano Says Man Utd Will Decide Soon on Midfield Signings — Fabrizio Romano Man Utd Midfield

fabrizio romano man utd midfield moved a step closer to a decision, with Manchester United set to settle their summer midfield signings very soon. The club want at least two new midfielders after missing out on any last summer, when the spending went over £200m and the focus stayed on attacking additions.

Romano on United’s shortlist

Fabrizio Romano said United have several names in play, but the timeline has tightened. His clearest point was the club’s urgency: "Man United also like Sandro Tonali, he’s another name they have on the shortlist."

He added that "Ederson from Atlanta could be a backup option in the list of Manchester United, available for €40-45m. So there is plenty of names, but Man United will very soon decide. And again, don’t forget Carlos Baleba, who has been on the list of Man United since summer 2025, and I think could still be an interesting name to follow for this transfer window."

That list gives United a clear spread of options. Tonali is on the shortlist, Baleba has stayed on it since summer 2025, and Ederson sits as the cheaper route at €40-45m. The club had already made tentative enquiries for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Conor Gallagher in the summer, but no midfielder arrived.

Casemiro and Mainoo

Perry Groves tied the rebuild to the next phase of United’s midfield. He said: "If you’re Manchester United and they have said, obviously, Casemiro is going, he’s got to be on your radar to go and play in that centre midfield role with Kobbie Mainoo."

Groves also said United are "looking for a central midfield player," and named Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson as the pair he and the recruitment staff would probably study for the role. He called Wharton "a Rolls Royce of a player," and said the Palace midfielder is "athletic," "very calm and composed," and able to play with vision.

United’s own summer spending points in the same direction. Last summer, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo all arrived, but the midfield stayed untouched. This time, the budget is being directed at that area, with at least two new signings targeted and the next call set to shape how Kobbie Mainoo is used behind them.
